Facebook. Instagram. Twitter. The endless 24-hour news cycle. Getting the kids to school on time. Deadlines at work. Planning dinner. Rushing through the supermarket. Waving to the neighbor as you pull in the driveway, praying he doesn’t want to have another conversation about the progressive potluck you’re supposed to be planning. Run the kids through a bath. Clean the kitchen. Read a bedtime story. Catch up on emails. Pray for sleep. You swear you only just closed your eyes when the alarm goes off. Rinse and repeat.
Modern life, with its constant engagement and connectedness, has most of us living in a low-to-moderate state of stress. As a result, we spend much of our time with our sympathetic nervous system switched to the ON position. At first glance, that doesn’t sound so bad. I mean, being sympathetic is a good thing, right? But not so fast. Our sympathetic nervous system isn’t feeling sorry for us. It’s trying to protect us. When you experience stress or anxiety about work or relationships or how you’re going to get that dog pee stain out of the new sofa, your sympathetic nervous system thinks a wooly mammoth is about to pounce on your mud hut. It’s the “fight or flight” response that has evolved over millions of years to protect us from danger. It’s meant to only be engaged for short spurts, to help us get away from the wooly mammoth, then shut down once the threat has passed. But because our fast-paced lives present us with a seemingly endless stream of stressful and anxiety-ridden challenges, our sympathetic nervous system is perpetually stuck in gear. When this system is active all the time, over a long period of time, we’re driving Fast & Furious-style toward extreme fatigue and illness.
At IM Reset, we reintroduce the nervous system to its natural state, in which the parasympathetic nervous system is in charge. Responsible for the “rest and digest” response, this system restores a calm and peaceful state, increases energy, and allows the body to rejuvenate itself. With the parasympathetic nervous system engaged, we can tell Vin Diesel to take a nap, because now we’re driving toward health and vitality with the top down and the wind in our hair. During the four-day Reset program, we train you to flip the switch from sympathetic to parasympathetic, no matter the challenge. Think of it as an investment in longevity.
Here’s what one participant had to say after her Reset experience:
IMS was prescribed to me by my doctor back in 2016. I started with the Power Series and loved it. I didn’t miss a weekend or a class. I started hearing about this magical sounding program called Reset, and attended my first one in early 2017. Since then, I’ve attended nearly every single one of them. I was a very busy executive/mom/wife/etc., but I made time to get there! The training we do for the nervous system and the movement practices we do have contributed to me being in the best shape of my life at 52 years old. I have epic amounts of energy all day; I’m fit and flexible; I’ve reversed an auto-immune disorder AND…(this is my favorite part) my smart scale tells me I have the body of a 33-year-old! I’ll take that to the bank!
