Never Too Late

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. The saying isn’t really about dogs, it’s about people, and the idea that once you reach a certain age, it’s too late to change your ways. As you get older it can be easy to fall into that trap. Maybe you’re in that nebulous time known as “middle age” and you’re thinking about a career change, or jumping back into the dating pool, or finally going for that Iron Man triathlon, but when it comes down to it, you throw your arms up in the air and say, “I’m just too old for this shit”. But the truth is, it’s never too late. The barrier isn’t how many times you’ve gone around the sun, it’s the patterns that have become embedded in your nervous system.

When you’ve been living with the same emotional patterns for forty, fifty, sixty years, they come to define not only how you see the world, but how you see yourself. Let’s say you’ve always dreamed of writing the great American novel, but emotional patterns established in childhood made you averse to taking risks. You were trained to believe that the sensible thing to do was go to school, get that degree, and enter the professional world. There would be time to write the novel later. And, for the most part, your decisions served you well: you’ve made a good life for yourself, you’ve built some wealth, you raised a family. But there’s always been that feeling nagging at you, the dream that keeps calling. Now you’re fifty and the idea for that novel is still in there, but so are those old emotional patterns. Even though you’ve spent your life doing the “responsible” thing, when you start to think that maybe now is the time, that fear and anxiety and doubt come creeping in and it becomes very easy to say, “Who am I kidding. It’s just too late.”

Well guess what? That’s a load of you-know-what. It’s never too late. I’ve seen people start whole new careers, find the love of their life, completely transform their bodies, even when they started out completely convinced that all of these things would be absolutely impossible to accomplish. Because it has nothing to do with how old you are, it’s about retraining your nervous system to approach change with optimism, hopefulness, and determination rather than fear, unworthiness, and shame. It’s about deconstructing those old emotional patterns and creating new ones that will drive the actions to create the outcomes you want.

Remember, it’s our emotions that drive the thoughts, and the emotions and thoughts that drive the actions. When we experience fear or doubt in the face of trying something new, it isn’t because there’s something inherently scary about the new thing. It’s because of a fear-based emotional pattern around trying something new in the first place. The older we are, and the more those emotional patterns are set in our nervous system, the harder it might seem to overcome them. Our Power Series curriculum is designed specifically to train you with the strategies and techniques for doing just that. We teach you how to recognize the patterns that are holding you back, understand that they will never take you where you want to go, and then create new ones that will. And the best part, it doesn’t matter how old you are! It’s never too late to begin a new journey.

But hey, you don’t have to just take my word for it. Here’s what one of our clients, Sandy M., had to say about her recent experience:

“I was just coming on sixty years of age. And I had fears around what’s going to happen in the next ten, twenty, thirty years. Going to my first Power Series Weekend, all of a sudden a whole new world opened for me and it gave me permission to think bigger, to dream bigger, to step into my own power. And the more I’ve engaged with this work, the more I get out of it and the more I’m able to be my best in the world. It calmed down my nervous system so much. I was definitely driving from fear and anxiety, and now I just know I am fearless because I have tools and I have a community to support me in this journey of becoming who I really want to be.”
