Emotional Access: The Road to a New Normal
It might be hard to remember sometimes, but you’ve been there before. Maybe it was sitting on a white sand beach, your toes buried in the warm sand, the sound of the waves breaking in the surf, reading the dog-eared paperback with the front cover torn off that someone left behind in the time-share. Maybe it was the day you paid off that credit card you applied for the first week of college from that guy in the quad who offered you a free frisbee and a bright future just for signing up. Or maybe it was just a Tuesday night, sitting with your best friend and a bottle of wine, binge watching season 2 of Ted Lasso. Whatever the case may be, you know the thing I’m talking about. Peace. Serenity. Sometimes it’s just, in the words of Simon and Garfunkel, ba-da-da da-da da, feeling groovy.
What if you could take the feelings you associate with those memories and pile them all together? Mash them up and create the kind of heightened emotional state you’ve heard about but always chalked up to hyperbole and wishful thinking? You know, feelings like euphoria, transcendence, and elation. We have words for these things because they’re real. Sometime, somewhere, there was someone who felt these emotions and said, hey, we need a word for what I’m feeling right now. And if they could feel it, so can you. Don’t believe me? I've always had a very loud mind, and it was always running the to-do list. Over and over, the mind would think: first I've got to do this, then that, oh shit! I almost forgot about this other thing, and I must remember to do this thing over here... This would go on all day long! At my first Reset, by late Friday morning I was certain something was very wrong. I couldn't put a thought together. The mind had gone quiet. I went up to my Trainer and totally broke the rules by breaking silence. I whispered: Something's wrong; I can't think - I literally can't put a thought together. He laughed and smiled and said, Kate...that's Peace. I cried laughing! I would have told you that I had absolutely experienced peace...I've been to the spa, I've lit candles and taken a bath with a glass of wine. I knew peace. But I'll tell you what: I didn't know THIS Peace.
