Imagine you live in a house that’s suspended over the ocean, built upon three wooden pillars that are firmly anchored to the ocean floor. The water is constantly eroding the wood and your job is to keep repairing the pillars so your house doesn’t crash into the sea. Sometimes the work is easy, sometimes it seems downright impossible. There are days when you wake up excited to get to work on the pillars, and then there are days when just the thought of all that damn wood makes you want to curl up in a ball and stay under the covers all day. If you neglect one of the pillars, the house will still stand, but it starts to feel a little wobbly under your feet. If you let two of them go, you’re still not getting wet, but all of your furniture is sliding across the floor and piling up on one side of the house. If you let all three of them crumble, you’re going to find yourself living underwater.
Adding to your daily workload is the pressure you feel all around you. No matter how much time and effort you put in, your neighbor’s pillars always seem to look better than yours. And he barely puts in any work at all. You go on social media and are bombarded with images of perfect pillars that make you feel like, no matter how hard you work, your pillars will never be as good as those. It seems like people are always judging your pillars and criticizing your woodworking skills. You buy books and take classes that promise to turn you into a master carpenter. Some of them offer good tips, but most of them just take your money and tell you that positive thinking is the secret to proper pillar management. As if happy thoughts will be enough to keep rot from setting in.
Of course, the house over the ocean is just a metaphor, but the three pillars are very real. I call them the 3 Pillars of Life: Career/Finances, Health/Body, and Relationships. These are the areas we spend most of our time working on. When all three are in good shape, life feels amazing. But when one is out of whack, we hang in there with a low-grade drag; when two need attention, we decidedly feel off; when all are suffering, we feel unhinged. Maybe you have a body fit for a swimsuit calendar and you’re surrounded by loving friends and family, but you're struggling to get by, paycheck to paycheck. You feel good about your health and relationships, but the financial burden is constantly at the top of mind. Or maybe you’ ve got millions of dollars in the bank, but you’re forty-five pounds overweight, your cholesterol is through the roof, and your closest relationship is with your pet iguana. What good is that fat bank account when you have no one to share it with and you’re one flight of stairs from a massive heart attack?
